Materials Library presents Flesh
Date - 9th Nov 2007
Place- Wellcome Collection
Description - An evening to provide an insight into the materiality of 'flesh', and its connection to the human body, culture and medicine. Our approach was be largely experiential, with our guests being given the opportunity to touch, feel, smell, cut, drill and even taste flesh. Experts in flesh, such as surgeons, body builders, butchers, artists and scientists gave talks and were available in galleriesÊ for a more informal interaction. Materials Library made a series of hands-on flesh exhibits for the evening, each one of which was juxtaposed with one of the objects exhibited in Medicine Man gallery and Medicine Now gallery. A Life Drawing class was also part of the evening, to allow our guests to reacquaint themselves with the human body. More info.

This evening's event takes place within the Idea Object gallery, exploring the materiality of the theme and the artworks hung within it. This is the last chance to experience the Materials Conjectures, especially created by the Materials Library for this event and take advantage of this unique opportunity to "please do not, do not touch". Featuring: The helium balloon equilibrium tasks, The Essence of Fluorescence, Cubes of Beuysian materials and due to popular demand -the return of the lead bugle! More info.

This event is the third in the series of four performative encounters staged by the Materials Library, in which you will be given the opportunity to explore the works of art within the State of Flux space, through the lens of the interdisciplinary Materials Library. This is your chance to use materials as a tactile language with which to explore the scientific, cultural and sensual aspects art. Featuring: The science of crystals, a lead bugle, tuning forks, 880 penny sweeties and the Materials Library Group bring coal back to the Power Station. More info.

Description - The second of the Materials Library's live encounters with The Scientific, this time within the context of the Poetry Dreams gallery. Responding to the gallery's title as a provocation for investigation, you are invited to explore an array of materials and demonstration equipment with a spirit of intrigue, curiosity and discovery. Featuring: The smallest chess set in the world, surrealist exercises in materials taxonomy, a football of silly putty and The Table of Improbable Objects. More info.

Future Palate

Description - An exhibit of new materials was designed and installed by Martin Conreen for Future Palate, the third in the Colour and Chemistry series of exhibitions. The first, Colour and Perception, looked at how artists use colour to reveal how we see, and how we construct what we see. It included the work of Bridget Riley, the British 1960s Optical artist, and Spencer Finch, a rising New York-based artist who recreates the exact light of famous places. The second, Artists & Alchemists, explored the physical making of colour and how artists embraced colour in a range of media, from reproducing chemical experiments (one artist recreated the BZ reaction) to creating beautifull glass work. The third, Future Palette move saway from the traditional model of a group show, to produce an exhibition that makes a parity between the creative work of scientists and artists.

Essence of Fluorescence

Description - A Materials 'Cabinet of Curiosity' has bee designed and installed by Mark Miodownik and Zoe Laughlin for the Dan Flavin: A Retrospective exhibition. The cabinet explores the nature of fluorescent materials. This is a chance to experience hands-on demonstrations of fluorescent and phosphorescent materials.
